A copy of an order of termination rendered under Section 161.206 is not required to be mailed to parties as provided by Rules 119a and 239a, Texas Rules of Civil Procedure. The majority were separated or divorced, although three of the lesbians were widowed, and 10 percent of both groups had never married. For most, thoughts were both negative and positive in that they produced both feelings of sadness and joy. Other children’s contact was quite erratic or infrequent (usually because of the instability of birth parents’ lives) and, in some cases, it was hard to predict when the next meeting might take place.

Birth parents have a number of reasons for placing the child for adoption, but usually it is because they want better lives for their children than they feel they will be able to give or provide for the child. Where the plan is for long-term care, it is important to recognise the role of kinship networks in maintaining the child’s sense of identity. The parents now mutually agreed to give up rights. The balancing of the interests of the children, parents, and other people associated with the children is at the centre of what is just in the family law system.
