Many important Purcell sources were not bound in the seventeenth century and survive in modern guard-books, where their original structure is sometimes obscured. Indications of a ‘separate’ original existence, where this is not immediately obvious, include the darkening and discolouration of the outer pages, contrasts in paper type or rastrology with adjacent material and independent schemes of pagination or foliation. In all three formats watermarked folios should be balanced by their countermarked or unmarked conjuncts, and in quartos each upper section of a mark should be matched by a lower one, although heavy trimming of oblong quarto books can completely remove sections of small countermarks.
