Many important Purcell sources were not bound in the seventeenth century and survive in modern guard-books, where their original structure is sometimes obscured. Indications of a ‘separate’ original existence, where this is not immediately obvious, include the darkening and discolouration of the outer pages, contrasts in paper type or rastrology with adjacent material and independent schemes of pagination or foliation. In some examples, such as Blessed are They that Fear the Lord in Lbl Add. 30931, the back page is discoloured but not the front, suggesting that the score was folded in half for storage; and other Flackton scores appear to have been folded several times, presumably to save postage costs.
